I love the original Karate Kid, so I am pretty excited that YouTube is going to be coming out with a spinoff in the near future. It might actually convince me to buy a short-term subscription for YouTube Red because of how much I enjoyed the movies.
This is kind of an interesting thing though because there is little to no reason to believe that the new series is going to be anything like the original movies. The actors are going to be the same, but if the writers do not have the right spirit going, it is not going to feel anything like the original. As a result, it really is hard to anticipate whether this will be a positive addition to the storyline or not. All I can conclude is that it is going to be different almost certainly.
However, I am pretty sure that most of us are going to watch it simply because of the nostalgia. I have written about this before in the context of Fuller House, but nostalgia is a very powerful tool. People want to go back to things that they like. They want to revisit a positive experience.
We don’t just see this on TV, but this is all around us. Why is homecoming such a big deal for so many colleges and high schools? People enjoy coming back to places where they have good memories. Even though they are not part of the high school or college anymore, they like to remember what it was like when they were indeed part of it.
This is an important differentiation to keep in mind that we consider nostalgia because there is nothing wrong with having great memories. In fact, great memories are actually great to have for obvious reasons. However, memories are just that. They are things that took place in the past, and they do not necessarily reflect the present.
Therefore, we have to keep in mind that nostalgia does not always reflect the present, and we might actually not remain a part of the things which we are nostalgic about. A lot of people set themselves up for disappointment when they realize that even though they might’ve been part of something in the past, and they are not necessarily a part of it anymore. Living in the past is a dangerous thing because it sets us up for disappointment at present.
We’re never actually going to be able to appreciate what we have right now because we just don’t really want to. We are too concerned with nostalgia in the past. Therefore, let’s appreciate things for what they are right now, and enjoy the past for what it was. We have to be careful that we do not conflate the two.
