Something else stands out to me in the newly released 2016-2017 Planned Parenthood annual report. I wrote on Monday about how it seems odd that Planned Parenthood does not want to Shout Their Abortions despite the fact that their leadership publicly supported that movement but did not originate it.
It has been often times said that only 3% of all the services Planned Parenthood provides are abortions. However, this is kind of funny math, and let me lay out how that works for you.
According to a footnote on page 30 of their annual report, Planned Parenthood defines a service as, “a discrete clinical interaction, such as the administration of a physical exam or STI test or the provision of a birth control method. In 2016, Planned Parenthood health centers saw 2.4 million patients, collectively delivering more than 9.5 million services during 4 million clinical visits.”
A few things are rather obvious about this. First, one patient may have multiple services performed at once. It is certainly possible to go in for a physical examination and have an STI test. That is one patient having two services during one visit using the definition above of what a service is.
However, it is vital to recognize that 9.5 million people did not come to Planned Parenthood. 2.4 million people came to Planned Parenthood, and 321,384 of them came for abortions. That means that approximately 13.4% of Planned Parenthood patients had abortions. I say approximately for a few reasons.
First, it is possible that there are patients who came for multiple abortions within the one-year window. Obviously, people are not limited to one abortion per year.
Second, it is possible that more than 321,384 individuals indeed came for abortions but for whatever reason did not ultimately have the procedure done to be registered in these numbers. Perhaps their pregnancies were too far along or perhaps something else prevented this tragedy, but it is certainly not impossible that more people entered Planned Parenthood with the intention to have an abortion.
By manipulating the definition of what a service is, Planned Parenthood is able to inflate the total number of services they provide and make abortions appear to be a much lower percentage than they actually are.
Again, I have to ask what the purpose of this is. I asked on Monday why Planned Parenthood buries the information about the number of abortions they provide in the back of their annual report. It is quite similar with this. Why do they artificially inflate the number of services simply to make abortions seem to be a miniscule portion of what they do when it actually is most likely multiple times higher than what they report?
This is another thing I cannot answer, but it is certainly an important questions and make you wonder why such manipulative tactics must be used? They are not dishonest, but they certainly play with the numbers to make abortions seem like a small part of what they do.
