If you learned nothing else from what I wrote last week, I hope I at least clearly communicated one very important fact: Planned Parenthood does not want abortion to be rare. They have a huge financial interest in keeping abortion legal in as many states as possible with no restrictions or at least as few as they can.
Let’s start with something very basic. At conception, a new entity is formed. This entity has its own genetic code that is unique. Apparently, according to some research profiled by CNN, “The focus of the study was the genome of a fetus whose mother's blood sample was taken at 18 weeks. The analysis of her blood, the father's saliva and the plasma contributed to a nearly full picture of the fetus's genome. This model showed that the fetus had 39 mutations that it had not inherited from either parent.”
Clearly, the implication of this research is that this genetic code is different than the genetic code of the mother or the genetic code of the father. It is a new combination.
This is significant because when we think about DNA, it is something that varies from person to person. That’s why it is effective for crime scene investigation. Your DNA is going to be different than mine, so if I leave behind some skin cells at the crime scene, the police will know to look for me and not you.
Does this in and of itself establish the personhood of the unborn child? I don’t know that it does yet, but it does tell me that the unborn child is not just another part of the mother’s body. It is something else. It is in fact a foreign body within the body of the mother. Therefore, when we hear arguments such as “My Body, My Choice,” it seems to be true at the very least that there is some other body that is distinct from mother’s. It has a different genetic footprint if you will. It is identifiably distinct from any other body part of the mother. It is not just a matter of an individual making choices about her own body but rather choices about her body and another entity within that body.
If the fetus is not a body part of the mother, then we have to try to identify what it actually is. Clearly, it is a foreign entity inside the mother made up of parts of both the mother and father, but we can’t just call it another part of the body that can be removed like an appendix. It is living off the mother, but it is not part of the mother. It has a unique genetic code.
